On March 8th 2021 Expedia Group, global leader in online travel bookings, brought together their remote workforce in a fun, inclusive online team bonding event called ‘Ping Pong Fight Club’s Lockdown Challenge Show. The focus was to target wellbeing and inactivity, just two of the side effects from working at home during the pandemic. Your People Associates presented the industry’s top team engagement activities as part of a webinar series covering wellness strategies for the remote workforce.

Jyot Deol, Talent Acquisition Manager, EMEA Expedia Group commented “Ping Pong Fight Club’s Lockdown Challenge Show gave us lots of laughs and kept us all entertained. I would highly recommend the show to other businesses that want to introduce some fun to their teams in these not no-so-fun times.’”

Nicola Kleinmann, Co-founder at Your People Associates added: “Team Building activities like Ping Pong Fight Club’s Lockdown Challenge Show can be implemented with significant impact to overall employee wellbeing and performance. It is high-performing and engaged employees that will help organisations flex, pivot and thrive during these times of continuous global change”.

Adrian Leigh, CEO and Founder of Ping Pong Fight Club continued, “The Challenge Show is fun, active and inclusive where remote teams can participate, socialise, be entertained and embrace a new recreation!’

According to research conducted by Gallup, studying nearly 1.4 million employees, across 192 organisations in 34 countries, employee engagement literally drives growth. Highly engaged employees returned 22% more profitability, 21% more productivity and also showed significant lower absenteeism (37%).

Jim Harter Ph.D., Gallup's chief scientist of employee engagement and well-being continued “employee engagement continues to be an important predictor of company performance even in a tough economy”.

These findings have been backed by recent research published by Deloitte. For every £1 employers invest in mental health and wellbeing initiatives for their employees, they will, on average, get a £5 return on investment in terms of reduced absence and staff turnover (Deloitte, 2021).

This second lockdown has been particularly hard during the winter months. Colder temperatures, coupled with the rise in COVID related mortality rates, has meant teams have undoubtedly been impacted by uncertainty, grief and isolation.

While teams and managers are fighting hard to produce more output and become more efficient and productive, wellbeing initiatives go a long way injecting “compassion”, “team work”, “vitality” and “focus.
